The CDHC is trained on a variety of skills during his or her 18-month training program, including sealant applications, coronal polishing, scaling for periodontal Type 1 patients, visual inspection of the oral cavity for carious lesions and other hard tissue anomalies, taking radiographs, visual soft tissue inspections, and hand instrumentation to prepare and place temporary restorations such as glass ionomers.

A certificate program that trains community health workers to bring better dental health to people in underserved communities has launched at a number of community colleges in the United States. Classes for the Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) program , created by the American Dental Association (ADA) in 2006, are open to certified dental assistants and registered dental hygienists. Coordinator (CDHC) program teaches community health worker skills to a dental or other health professional who may be from a private practice or public health setting. Many families are unsure about what dental services are necessary, where those services are located, or how to begin to access those services.

2017-10-31 “The CDHC training seems to be more practical and hands-on in not only educating patients, but also actively encouraging and supporting them as they seek to access and undergo treatment. There is definitely a practical emphasis on reaching out to vulnerable or marginalized members of communities, helping patients find a dental home and removing whatever barriers exist to them undergoing … The CDHC is the point person for project related activities and communications pertaining to improving the capacity of the community clinics to deliver quality oral health care to young children. The CDHC curriculum was developed by experts in education, public health and dentistry to meet the seven core competencies. The educational components of the curriculum are designed for online delivery, accompanied by a series of in-person sessions for student skill development and evaluation. In response to this lack of access to available dentists, the American Dental Association launched the Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) program in 2006 to provide community-based prevention, care coordination, and patient navigation to connect people who typically do not receive care from a dentist in underserved rural, urban and Native American communities.

The Children's Dental Health Clinic is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving children and young adults, ages 0-21, in the Greater Long Beach and South Bay areas who are economically disadvantaged or have issues in access to care. There are currently 130 students enrolled in CDHC programs among 17 CDHC curriculum approved schools, with already 316 trained CDHC graduates. Residents of underserved communities, and every vulnerable population group, no matter where they reside, could benefit greatly from trained Community Dental Health Coordinators.
